poose
Ever since I got my Focus the fan has only worked on setting 3+4. I got a new heater resisistor off eBay that worked fine for about ten minutes and then burnt out and I now only have a fan that works on setting 4. Is it something else causing the resistor to short or could it just that the eBay item aint that good ?
wase16ll
fan only working on high speed tends to point to resistor, so could be shot. but you mentioned that it previously worked on 3...could be heater motor itself is a bit on the tight side, ie semi-seized, which then draws more current than resistor can handle
poose
Is it easy to get motor out and will it need replacing if its tight or just lubricating. Before I put the new resisistor in it ran fan on setting 3&4.
wase16ll
which focus are we talking about...year/model the fact fan worked on 3 previously proves that resistor was in play before...by sound of it, if motor isnt siezed badly [would blow fuse before resistor] then could be possible to free off with a bit of work...could find the motor brushes are worn too, in which case brushes are available from specialists [not fords] or just fit another unit,

wase16ll
gives 24mins to remove/refit motor in the mechanics bible, so think its safe to say a reasonably easy task :)
poose
Had the motor out today it seems ok just wd40 it and stuck it back in, hopefully they are going to replace the resistor for me.
wase16ll
might also pay to check the switch is supplying fan/resistor at different speeds
Focus-Jonny
Hi Poose I had the same issue on my old 1999 1.6 LX, it turned out to be the blower control dial! the contacts on the inside had melted at positions 3&4 have you had a look at it? I was advised to keep the dial at position 0 when starting the car to prevent it happening again.
poose
Heater worked fine on all blower settings until resistor burnt out, beginning to think it was a duff part. Going to go to Maplins at weekend and get a thermal fuse and see if I can fix the original one by cutting the old one out and soldering a new one in !
