By the time the TV-show Knight Rider was popular we saw a lot of Opel Astra's, Vectra's and especially Calibra's with the red swining light like KITT.

In non-UK countries Vauxhall is called OPEL.

Yeah I hate it when cars smoke like that, it makes me want to hold my breath or turn on recirculate air lol. The worst time was when I was going up a slip road, trying to have a bit of fun flooring it up to 70, when an old transit van put a stop to that by covering me in a cloud of diesel smoke <_<
