Saxo won't start - any ideas?

Sorry, this is a bit off-topic but I thought some people might have some ideas.

The OH is a doctor and is on nights, she took the Saxo yesterday and it wouldn't start this morning, seemed like the battery was dead. I have an emergency starter thing which usually does the trick, but that wouldn't work.

I drove over in Cho and tried to jump start her, but the Saxo just wouldn't budge. The immobilizer light came on, and she was just making that irritating 'ticking' noise that tends to happen when the battery is low. Clearly the power from either the emergency starter (which had been charging all weekend), or the fiesta should have got it going, but didn't.

Any ideas why? We've had to abandon the car at the hospital, and now I'm wondering what to do!

Are you getting any indication of power when you switch on the lights etc? If so it could be the starter motor that's siezed up with the cold. Try som light taps with a hammer on the casing and the spindle if you can get at it not too hard though you may damage the bearings. Rocking the car in forward and then reverse gear may also help with a few good shoves or try a push start if you can get traction where the car is parked. It's worth checking the connections to the starter motor as well it may just be a disconnection and nothing specifically to do with the weather.

sounds like a dead cell in the battery or a bad positive or negative connection are famous for goin on them

Thanks - it must be the battery.

Turned out the jump leads were dead, so I bought some more, linked it up to the fiesta and got it going. Planning on replacing the saxo with a golf this weekend if we find the right one, so don't want to spend £60 on a battery if I can help it :D
