Mostly all zetec engines are excellent. Damn good engines and good fun too. The main problem with them is that when they get older some are prone to very heavy oil use - like a litre of oil per tank of fuel. Well looked after ones will run on for a long while. But ones that haven't been looked after and abused will be nackered at around 100k

But ones that haven't been looked after and abused will be nackered at around 100k A litre per tank of fuel? What the fudge? Who on God's green Earth has had this happen? That's a bit mental ... my MKIV Fiesta liked to burn oil a little, but not at that rate or even close. Father's has done 65k (1999 1.8 Zetec Focus) and it's never actually consumed oil to the point it was noticed. That's not to say all are like that of course. I know the smaller engines were known for giving up earlier than expected (looking at you, 1.25 and 1.4 Fiesta!), but always believed the larger engines themselves to be pretty impeccable (with regular servicing), asides from the associated problems (snapped timing belts ftw!) that many cars get.
