Doesn't IKEA keep flat pack nuclear power stations on the shelf ??? 🤣

They do, but whilst a proper nuclear station take 12 years to build & commission, the IKEA flat pack takes 15 years just to get out of the darn box!

Serious lack of planning.

My Mrs is sick of hearing me say this, but when I joined the electricity supply industry over 50 years ago, there was a plan. This involved progressive run down of coal, using our own then abundant supplies of natural gas to bridge the gap while large scale nuclear, supplemented by renewables, came on stream. Unfortunately politics got in the way.

Until of course, there is a lockdown with the government preventing you leaving your own house, then you starve.

That's genius Stephen. Of course, if we all starve to death, we won't need the power at all!😀

I remember seeing old 1950s B&W clips of Raymond Baxter (BBCs Tomorrows World) announcing that because nuclear energy would be so cheap to produce, that it wouldn't be worth the admin sending people out bills for usage, so electricity would be free LOL

The elephant in the room is population growth...there are far too many people about now.

Something like 20 million more people in the UK now than in 1950.  That's a 40% increase!!

All of those extra people need power, food and transport.

In my primary school days there was a world population of 4 Billion, now, there's 8 Billion - it's not just the UK LOL

Then build it with no tools apart from one Allen key

Yeah, it's a worldwide problem.  But the point is that if the population wasn't growing at such a rate, nuclear and renewables would be far more viable now.  The 1950s idea wasn't as crazy as it sounds now.

On a related topic, I worked out the gas and electric on my consumption over the last 12 months then used the latest figures for the Oct rises, and my increase in cost is £3490 . £5300 a year. Obviously it going to increase again in Jan and April!!!

My good fortune is I fixed last sept for 2 years. So I've got 12 months to get used to the higher bills. I don't know how alot of people will manage and guess quite a few are sleep walking into Oct.

We managed to get a two year fix on our energy prices when we moved back in October last year, so still have another 14 months left. Currently paying @£45 pcm for gas and electric.

Incidentally tonight is the first evening for a long time that we put the kitchen lights on ( 6× LED's ) for tea but after reading the earlier posts prior to tea .....yup you've guessed lol, had to ho and see what consumption was ....£1.61per hour for the lights alone.....ouch.

Ordering some more LED/ Usb motion lights Asap.

I'm curious, what is the wattage rating of your LED bulbs, cost should be nothing like that?

ATM, no idea tbh. Just not got round to changing them as we have a new set of 18 LEDs somewhere that we purchased prior to moving as they are brighter white light LEDs if that makes any sense.

I'll go and have a look in a bit  lol

I have 3 x LED spotlights in my kitchen, at 20w each. That's 60w in total so at 40p/Kwh, they would cost less than 3p/hour to run... Now, if you have an electric 9Kw shower, then your talking LOL

First pic is of the LEDs that are already in and the second pic is of the ones we bought from our last house  just changed one of the bulbs and they are way too  bright for the kitchen, lol.

Your 8.5w bulbs (at 40p/Kwh) will cost 0.004p/hour each to run... fill your boots LOL

Lol. No idea why the dumb meter was suggesting its £1.61per hour.

The 6kw ones are staying in for now or we might end up getting some stray arrivals from Doncaster Airport circling above 🤣

Now, my security outside floodlights use to be only 1Kw (now replaced with 50w LEDs), I think you may be getting your watts confused LOL

Did you have the cooker, tumble drier or kettle on at the same time?

Is it a Smart Meter screen or just a generic plug-in?  I'd be wanting to know why there was such a major error on it myself!

I guess you have very kindly connected up the street lights in your road to your meter 🤣

From my point of view, living down the road from Hinkley Point C just being built-we’re so close there is no need to turn on any night time lights 😀

There was an interesting program on BBC4 about the new Hinkley C plant a few weeks ago.  It's a totally new design offering better efficiency.  Looks like my local (Sizewell) will no longer be the country's most efficient nuclear plant when that opens!

Sizewell is getting another one apparently.I think the government is panicking 😀

This is a widespread problem, in that many folk have no idea what in their home uses how much electricity. You cannot hope to save on consumption unless you first understand how you consume it. My mum (in her 80s) thought she was saving loads of electric by not switching on a living room lamp. (one I had replaced with a 10w LED).

I drew up an  'electric list' for the most common appliances in her house, starting off with her 10Kw electric shower, the heaviest item of usage that most will have. Then her iron, oven, washing machine etc. Her LED light bulbs hardly even register on the list (though her old fashioned tungsten ones would have)

Yep, knowing where you are using electric is absolutely key in saving on what you use...

I’m thinking of changing our internet service provider.Been with BT since the beginning.

10Kw electric shower,

You need to replace that with an LED version. Then she can have a 'light' shower 🤣

Should be, but we've been waiting over a decade.  They could've built it by now if it wasn't for all the opposition.  Still not 100% sure if it's going ahead at the moment.

Well it’s been reported that the finance is in place. But as we know it could all change tomorrow.
