@Zico you just have to hope now the new members are nice people.

I hope so too. I'm going to be working with my line manager to go through any applications and interview them.

Are you you going to phychologically profile each person and not consider them if they look to not fit your criteria 😂

I don't like having to constantly replace CFL bulbs in Nan's living room...but think I've realised why now!!  Her lights all hang at an angle, 135 degrees rather than 180, this is causing a huge bend in all of the bulbs that need replacing but I'd never considered that might be the reason for the short life...

So, I'm looking to replace then all with LED...anyone know if they'll work better on the wonk?  Also, does the CFL equivalent still work for LED, so 9w is actually 40w?  And finally, where's the cheapest place to buy quality ones?  Guessing somewhere like Screwfix is probably cheaper than B&Q etc?

I found some very good (and not too expensive) ones at The Range, They had various fittings and shapes (I needed them to be both SES and compact/ golfball), two types higher power with diffuser coating or lower power and clear glass. Go for the former, it's pretty much the same light output but a lot easier on the eyes than the LED filament giving a strong focussed beam of light. Strata brand IIRC.  I think there's no clear calculation on LED power to old incandescent power, depends on technology used, diffuser and brand. Most LED quote lumens which can then be equated back to old incandescent power.

I can't think of anything in a LED bulb that would be sensitive to gravity, or mounting angle. The chip is small & light. However they can be more sensitive to ambient temperature. CFLs work better when warm, but with LEDs the efficiency reduces, and the lifetime of both the electronics and the LED chip degrade badly with high temperature. Typical figures often used are to halve the life for every 10 deg C increase. So LEDs may not last long in a fully enclosed or very badly ventilated shade.

All recent CFLs should have a lumen rating on the packing, and so should LEDs. The lumens per watt figure for LEDs is slowly increasing, good ones can now be well over 100 lumens per watt, or 900 lumens for a 9W bulb. But they vary a lot.

Watch out for the colour. Most CFLs were made in warm white (2500 to 3000K), to match the old incandescents. Going to a cool white (5000K to 6000K) in a living room can be a bit brash, I think. Fine for work areas like kitchens, but I prefer a warmer light in living areas. A lot of LEDs are cool white, just for the impact of that bright, "modern" white light.

Thanks both of you, looks like there's a lot more to this than I thought!

The heat could well be an issue, they're in glass tulip downlighter shades which I imagine are very good for catching the heat.  Plus she's in her 80's...the room is like a sauna!

You can compensate a bit by dropping the wattage. A modern LED at say 5W should have similar Lumens to a CFL at 9W, or an old 40W filament bulb. Half the wattage gives half the temperature rise. Should be fine in a glass shade open at one end.

I don't like crunchy peanut butter...

Whoever designed this has clearly never heard the expression 'like a knife through butter'...  Tbh a trowel would be more appropriate.  In fact, I think it might even be what they rendered 1950s council houses with!  I'd also like to know why they put a near-solid substance in a jar with the smallest possible opening, so you can only remove a morsel at a time...and forget trying to spread it...one lump or two?  On the plus side, it must be good for weight loss seeing as you can't swallow any of it, it'll just be a permanent fixture inside your mouth now.

Think I've found a new career as a food critic...

Why did you put it on sale. Probably might be worth a bit when it becomes a future classic.

It probably would be, but at the moment it needs a new alternator, crankshaft seal (which means removing the timing belt so it would be prudent to do a belt/tensioner/water pump change at the same time) and also the rear suspension is starting to fail so that needs replaced/refurbished (typical for Peugeot/Citroen from the 80s and 90s).

If I could do all the work myself it would be worth it, but as I cannot it would be almost £1k of work and neither my mother nor I could justify spending that.

I don't like the fact it has been raining all night and looks like it'll rain all day too.  The joys of living in Scotland!

It's not just Scotland this time, we had some pretty good storms here last night as well.  The rain was so heavy it's finally washed the bird poo off my neighbours car which had been annoying me for weeks!  Sadly it has cancelled two local events this weekend though.

Thanks Peter, which would you chose out of these two?

I don't have a local Range as suggested by Andy but if the local HB stocks either of those they look like a reasonable price and have frosted glass...  Just seems like they'll both produce the same 'amount' of visible light with those stats?

I'm starting to not like the reality of job searching. The training I want to go into last year there was only 3 vacancies for my specialism and 300 applicants 😢. I just hope my qualifications help towards it.

There's also a appitude test you have to do so the employs can shortlist people of the highest score so they can interview. That was hard doing the practice ones. Honestly how do people understand this below. It says there's a logical pattern you have to identify and put the right symbol in. I was scored as average however the other tests, one to read an article and answer questions of it and a numerical test I was scored below average. This fried my brain just doing it as you have about a minute to answer each

I couldn't have done it in a minute, but the answer is top row, 3rd from the left.

Every line has 1 symbol, 2 symbols, 3 symbols.  So the missing one has to have 2 symbols - discount any 3 symbol ones.

The 2 symbols never include the single symbol, so discount any with the 4 square dots.  Needs to be the 3 lines and the f.

If there had been 2 with 3 lines and the f, it would be the one with the f on the right hand side, as it's always opposite to the order in the 3 symbol box.

But as I say, I wouldn't have done it in a minute!

Understand it now I think 😂

I don't like this BMW 540i driver just now, used the left lane to go straight and get in front of me then went in the bus lane to undertake a few cars at a zebra crossing. Was only 4 cars ahead of me 😂. Don't think driving like a fool will get you anywhere quicker 🙄. Im honestly hating tinted plates which this beemer had. Its hard to even read it which really makes me think the police need to concentrate on taking off the road.

I don't like being behind some twit in a 19 plate Corsa who thought the red light meant "GO" at a pelican crossing!!!  Thank goodness nobody had yet started walking but it went red for a good 2 seconds before he went so he made the "educated" decision to go anyway.

Dare I say a typical Vauxhall driver.

Tinted plates seem really popular. I can't, for the life of me though, figure out what purpose they serve other than to obscure your plate... It definitely isn't retro reflective any more!

Might of been a young driver living the financed life 😂. I remember someone on here had their car written off by a young guy in his financed vauxhall Adam with his private plate. I honestly don't see why you'd risk financing a car with little to no driving experience.

I believe that's the reason why they are illegal, that traffic / speed cameras might not be able to read the reg plus people can struggle also to read it. He blacked the whole car so probably wanted to match the plate. There's a corsa driver I've been seeing around for some time now and he has tinted plates. This guy seems to be alright though. He probably notices me now 😂

Now I don't like accidently overtaking two cars on a side road. There was 2 cars in front of me. I couldn't tell what they were doing. This impatient smart car driver two cars behind decided to go on the other side of the road to go straight down. A seat driver did the same thing. I moved over to see and then just went through. Realised there was a learner in front who stopped so a car at the end of the road could come however was stopped.

Aah yes the "blacked out" look... Just like the car I nearly hit because he had parked/broken down/abandoned it at the side of a country road half in a hedge, and couldn't even see his reflectors as I drive right past... Doesn't appeal to me!

Makes me think if I should send my dash cam clip of him to the police. I've had enough of bad drivers especially ones who have money to do their car up. They'd probably flag his car up just for the plate. Don't know if they do anything about him going through a left turn lane and merging in close to me.

Unless they consider it careless driving, afaik the arrows on the road (just as the speed limits painted on the road) don't actually stand up in law - whereas filter arrows on traffic lights and other signage does.

There's a junction by me that people sometimes turn left at - ahead only arrows on the road, but a standard green light and no "no left turn" signs. Gotta watch for em when you try getting out of the left turn filter lane.

I don't like the weather turning just as I've touched up some paint!

Got the first few bits done and it started spotting, now have a downpour :( hopefully the paint will still set!

which would you chose out of these two?

I would go for the warm white, 806 lumen, 9W one.

It is a couple of watts more than I ideally had in mind, and may be brighter than needed. If all 6 bulbs were fitted, it would light a big or very dark coloured room. If your existing CFLs are 9W, they are usually about 500 lumens (40W old equiv.). 800 lumens is at least 60W old equiv. But you can always leave some bulbs out. And at £1.50 ea, a lifetime a bit less than the promised 25000 hours would not be a disaster.

6500K cool white is very white, some people would detect a blueish tone. It is rather subjective, but your Nan is well used to the warm white colour! Also it is becoming generally recommended to avoid too much blue light late at night. Some studies link it to poor sleep patterns.

I had a quick look at Screwfix, but the choice is similar, and prices a bit higher.

Poundland used to sell LED bulbs, may be worth looking in there.

Still have one in the hallway, 2-3 years on.
