Things I Don't Like

Featured Replies

In fairness, some of the blame has to go to the manufacturers for this, VW in particular made a huge flaw with their lighting system, annoying as most things are well thought out and designed for the driver on them.
The Golf has auto lights, but no tell tale on the dash.  The tell tale is on the headlight switch by your knee, it's completely unnoticeable (how often do you look down there?) but even then it's confusing as it's orange for 'on' rather than green!  It also doesn't have rain lights like the Mk3 Focus does, and the Peugeots had for years before that.  So in cloudy rain or fog the lights don't always come on, but the driver can't tell whether they're on or not.  On the rare occasion I do turn mine on for inclement weather/dusk I always forget to turn them off again.  They go off with the ignition so there's no warning buzzer when you open the door, but it means I drive around for the next week looking like an idiot with all the lights on in bright sunshine...  But more importantly obscuring the brake lights as well...
The old Vectra had an equally stupid system, where it used the '))((' sign for BOTH sidelights and headlights...so again you never knew which were on from a glance!  Although the indicators were also stupid on that car, the stalk didn't have set positions, it was like a joystick that always returned to the centre...you could never cancel the indicator without switching the other one on! [emoji2357]
Mind you the Focus only had the sidelights icon on the dash for both side lights and dipped.

The Octy has the same indicator as the Golf, by the headlight switch not on the dash, although the auto lights do have a "rain" mode where if the auto wipers go to a certain speed / you put them into manual the lights will come on.

I have got used to it now, but push for beam and pull for cancel took a bit of getting used to!

I don't like that we've got several people off at work for various reasons; one recuperating after hernia surgery a few weeks ago (likely to be off another 2 weeks), another just signed off with depression (not likely to be back any earlier than November), my line manager on holiday for another 12 days and another on leave this week (combined with my colleague off for hernia surgery means nobody for a specific district that needs looking after).

Last but not least, the lazy cow of the team, while being in the office (doing FA) has resigned and will be leaving the team down two technical support roles for at least a month or more. The hag didn't even have the decency to resign before our line manager went on holiday. It is final FU from the old bag before she leaves. Our line manager even spent the last few hours before going on holiday getting an advert out for one technical support role (due to a colleague being promoted within the team) and could have sorted it out for two roles instead!

Oh well, silver lining is that the ***** will finally be gone and hopefully we will get two new team members in.

I don't like hearing what happened to my grandad. Heard he was at an ATM trying to take money out. This guy and girl came up to him as he was struggling with it. I think the girl told him to put his year of birth in which he did and nothing happened as he had struggled to remove the card. Forgot what I heard happened next but when he went to ask the shop owner he said the card is not there so that stupid couple must have taken it 😤

He quickly went to the bank to change his pin number and went to the criminal investigation department. Sadly they took £1000 out his account but thankfully I think the bank can help as it was reported I think before it was taken out. It's just sad that we have scum on this planet.

True, but the Focus didn't use sidelights alone while on Auto, so once the icon was on the dash, you knew the dipped beam was on.

I reckon most cars have the rain mode nowadays, the newer Golfs probably do tbf.  I just compare mine to the Mk3 Focus as they're both the same year...but forgetting the Focus was from the start of it's production run, while the Golf was from the end.  I still think it's a daft idea not to have the headlight tell tale on the dash though!

I cant remember how full beam works on mine lol, the bulbs for full are worse than the dipped ones but I use them so rarely its not worth the cost of upgrading them!  I think it's pull for flash (doesn't hold) but then push for on properly and pull for off.  I don't like the wiper stalk though, the light switch sits perfectly vertical in auto which is where it will be for 99% of the time and is aesthetically satisfying...but the wiper stalk auto is one notch up...not aesthetically satisfying unless indicating right at the same time!

dont like driving 3 hrs to another work place only to find i had left a piece of vital equipment to do my job at my normal work place, and on top of that, got flashed by a speed  camera doing 35ish in a 30mph zone. not my day at all.

and my boss is driving up with the equipment. not sure what mood he will be in when he arrives!! oh well the day cant get any worse

@Zico you just have to hope now the new members are nice people. Not long ago my neighbour next door moved I heard as she built a house in Jamaica. She was a really horrible lady. Called the council after we built the garage as she thought it was going to be used as a house. I heard this couple on the road actually moved and put their house on rent because of her. Luckily we now we have this decent couple who live next door now. Both are teachers. They are the ones I helped remove that mark on their car and a few days ago they brought me chocolates 😂.

My neighbour next door also sadly moved and put their house on rent as they had to move closer to their childrens new school as they are worried about them travelling alone because of the crime. Thankfully the tenants are really nice and the original guys we still see thankfully as they visit their mum who lives just across the road.

Yeah after hearing that it makes me more vigilant now. I have to take public transport to the new uni. Just yesterday I was getting a little angry on the bus 😂. At one stop the driver couldn't let people in however was saying to people at the front to move upstairs as there's seats. I don't like sitting upstairs plus I wasn't far from my stop so prefer to stay near the door. No one else moved or went upstairs so the driver just went off. We was just saying these people are selfish and what comes around goes around. From my heart I didn't think or want it to be like that.

I believe sometimes they flash but are not actually active? Fingers crossed.

I got caught out a couple of years back and was given the option to attend a course, which I did. Funny thing - the guideline (not the rule) is, I understand, posted speed limit +10%+2mph, so I was allegedly doing 35 in a 30. Chatting to other attendees over tea and biscuits, it appeared everyone had received a notice saying they were doing the bare minimum speed to hit the guideline figure and trigger a notice of prosecution, so 35 in 30, 46 in 40, 68 in 60, etc, not one was even an mph above. Seemed rather a coincidence, though I believe the parameters for being allowed to attend a course are the speeds above plus another 7mph (so 35-42 in a 30 for example).

I mentioned this to my local sub-postmaster as I knew he had also recently attended a course - he said the same. Then the rest of the customers in the post office piped up (I obviously live in a place with a high proportion of offenders) and said they had had the same experience!

I hope you warned him of the speed camera...your day could get worse if he gets flashed as well!

Current guidelines are speed plus 10%.
The + 2mph was done away with a while back.

You know what usually happens when someone says something to the effect of "oh well, today can't get any worse!" :wallbash:

It looks like pretty much all UK motoring website aren't aware of this change, including the AA.  That said, it's just a guideline and individual forces are free to decide their own policy so no-one should be getting too upset if the +2 MPH part has been dropped.  I reckon regularly doing 78-79 MPH on the motorway (i.e. on cruise control) was always a bit high risk anyway, in my book it makes sense to leave a bit of margin for error, after all that's what the + 10% allowance is supposed to be for.

I'll be honest if I was doing 74 MPH (maybe 75 MPH) in good conditions I'd be a bit p1ssed if I got a ticket though.

*Drops cruise control to 77mph* 🤭

Ah who am I kidding, I'm old and boring now and stick to 70...until the DPF needs a regen anyway.  Reckon I'd get away with that?  Sorry officer, the internet told me to do 4000rpm to clear it out...no-one said that shouldn't be in 6th gear...

When was this change, Clive, and are all forces using it? Certainly my local force (North Yorks) was working on the former ACPO guidelines 2 years ago, and just checking on their website (updated 2019), it's still there now.

I have my speed alert set to posted speed +3mph up to 35 and +4mph thereafter, so not relying on the +2mph anyway.

That's good to know 👍. I get scared and doubt myself whenever coming home from a route which had a speed camera. I know at the moment passing it I was doing the correct speed but when I get home I just start doubting myself 😅

So what would happen if I went over but was below 10%? Would it still flash?

@1979Damian the thing which I really worry about not to happen is getting points on my licence. I honestly don't understand guys back in my previous uni getting 6 points for driving with no insurance. I don't want my insurance going up. I think that's mainly why I start dwelling over if I went through a speed camera afterwards 😅

It depends on the individual police force and it's own policy.  The ACPO guidelines are just that, just a guideline, each force is free to ignore the "guidelines" if they see fit.

At one point I was regularly driving from Leeds to Milton Keynes which took my through at least 5-6 different police force areas on the M1 and tended to set the cruise control for a "true" speed of 74 MPH (76-77 MPH on the speedo) and didn't get any tickets in the 18 months I was regularly making the journey.  Largely, I suspect that as long as people aren't full on taking the p1ss i.e. driving at 78-79 MPH (actual) continuously they shouldn't have much to worry about...(unless someones doing 78 MPH in a 30 zone, in which case they should have your hands chopped off in my book!) 🤣

I'm the same. I've been driving for 16 1/2 years with a clean licence. Never had any points and never been pulled over for speeding. When I was younger I did show off but that was before static and mobile speed cameras were widely used. Now I see them everywhere.
Don't get me wrong, I still like speed and do accelerate like a bat outta hell most of the time but I'm a bit more sensible now. I'll get to the speed limit and calm down and I always stay within the 10% guidelines (speedometer indicated mph).

The difficulty I have with speed limits is not so much the 70 (or 60 for that matter), but some of the lower ones where you have great difficulty in knowing what the limit actually is. I'm thinking of places where you drive along and it's up and down 30/40/50/40/30 etc, often for no apparent reason, and quite often not clearly marked anyway. I've posted on here several times shots of signs which are completely buried in vegetation, or so dirty as to be illegible.

The speed alert function is certainly a help in trying to stick to the limit, but if you can't see the sign then the system won't be able to read it either, and as we all know the GPS data is not up to date.

Similarly to @1979Damian I've driven extensively on motorways etc with no problems for years (thick end of 1,000,000 miles), but the only time I've been caught out was a 30 which I didn't realise was a 30 until I got the notice in the post!😠

So, 3 weeks ago I ordered and paid for a new sofa. It was very expensive but now I find out the company has dropped the price of the sofa by £30.
It's so typical though isn't it? You buy something and then a short time later the item goes on sale.

Nope. Lol. Did I say my day couldn't get any worse? Well I checked into hotel for overnight stay. What a dump!! Can't blame anyone for booking it as I did the booking. Looked ok from the photos. Restaraunt doesn't look clean, or apealing.

Ended up going to Aldi for some snacks and cans of beer. Lol
