New Key Needed

Hi All

We've just bought a 2002 1.8tddi hatch back but it's only come with the one key, the key with 3 buttons on it. That key is pretty worn and Timpsons say it's too worn for them to cut another key from. How easy is it to fit another lock set and to recode a key yourself?

According to the owner's handbook that came with the car we need two keys to be able to code other keys and as we don't have the special key I'm a bit stumped.

Thanks

Malc

A lot of Ford mechanics or specialists are able to determine the key code by just looking at the key. If the key is too far worn to determine the correct key code the code can also be determined by opening a lock. The lock plates inside the lock have numbers and the key code can be determined by these numbers. However both reading the key and the lock plates require skills, knowledge and experience.

On the Focus MK1 you need 2 original working (programmed) keys to be able to program an additional key yourself by the procedure listed in the instruction manual. If you have just 1 key it is not possible to program an additional key yourself. In this case a new key can only be programmed to the PATS system of the car with a suitable diagnostic system which has the ability to program the Ford PATS system.

Should be noted if the key gets too worn it can refuse to open the doors or even work in the ignition some Mobil locksmiths can still cut you s new key and programme it for you but you wont see much change from 拢100

and the other way round , if you manage to get a new key cut, it may not work in a worn ign barrel or door lock,

Bit the bullet and went to the Ford dealers. New key plus programming 拢120. Given SWMBO's track record it's a good investment 馃榿

Looks like 433412 to me too.

There always has to be a 1 in there somewhere as that is the bit that physically turns the lock barrel once the other cuts line up with their corresponding rings in the barrel.

Allways has to be a Number 4 cut..

Older fords used the tip to turn the barrel (once disc's are lined up).

Newer fords use the Number 4 disc to turn the barrel.

When the keys start to were to excess, you will see nasty marks( little dents made by the disc) on the number 4 cuts.

Nah, definitely 100% 433412.

Any key cutter worth their salt will be able to confirm.

Yeh, and me, lots , lol. Not many ive got wrong, I always do a lower cut if a worn key and try in lock incase a 2 looks 3 or 1 looks like a 2, you can cut down but buggered key if the other way round. Allways look directly side on to key, looking at an angle not ideal on a worn key

Dead easy to de-code.

You know theres always at least 1 number 4.

You can plainly see there are 3 other heights on there.
