Gears Grinding When Reverse Accidentally Shifted Into While Moving Forward

Hi all,

I know this may be a silly question to some of you, but today I was driving my Fiesta (only got it yesterday) and I accidentally went into reverse gear while rolling forward slowly. This caused the gearbox to make an unpleasant grinding noise, which has got me worried. I pulled it straight out of reverse gear as soon as I heard the grinding noise, but I'm conscious as to whether it has damaged the gears or will have future implications? Or what actually happens to the gears as a result of doing this. Also, my car is Diesel if that makes any difference. Can anyone reassure me that nothing is wrong with my car, as I am quite worried lol!

Thanks in advance,

LJF

Nothing to worry about unless you were doing it at 20mph plus, theres no synchromesh in reversre gear so it thethe 2 gears trying to mesh your hearing, probably everyone who drives has done it at some point, low speed and you hear it and natural reaction is to stop forcing it.shouldnt have done any harm

Thanks inatt!

I was just a bit worried because I only bought the car yesterday, so obviously I don't wanna destroy it lol! It's only done 35k miles aswell so it could've happened with the previous owner...

You have relieved my nerves (somewhat) and I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to reply good sir :)
