An 06 Focus 1.6tdci Has A Dpf Doesn't It

Honest John find fault with every car tbf...

But yeah, I do have a hatred of the DV6, I've owned various different diesels and this is by far the worst... Poor MPG, poor acceleration (too much car, not enough engine), noisy, strained, many common faults due to poor design - which isn't helped by any deviation from service schedule, etc etc.

I've owned old 2.0 8v HDi's that have had ridiculous mileage, barely serviced, abused as workhorses...just chucked a £50 remap on to make it quicker and more economical (130bhp and 55mpg avg without any modern tech or VNT!), abused them myself and they've never caused me issues - the cars fell apart around the engine which is one reason I chose something newer!

Quite a few people tried to put me off the DV6 before I bought the Focus and being the stubborn bugger I am didn't listen...wish I had listened lol!! I don't personally like the 1.8TDCi either, been in more refined Massey Fergussons lol. As I often say I'd go for the 2.0 16v if I could chose again.

We've had our old Mk1.5 1.8TDCi 115ps Ghia estate for 7 years and it's now done 120K. It was our first (and only) diesel so I can't compare with any others but I can say it's been one of the best, if not the best, car I've owned in over 40 years of driving. It's also one of very few that hasn't shown any rust at this age (12 years). Although it's starting to show its age mechanically - I think the DMF is on the way out - the lump has been totally bomb-proof (touch wood), still runs very sweetly and still has impressive acceleration, much better than my 5-year-old 1.8HE petrol Focus. It's quieter too.

It was pure luck that I bought it not knowing that it was one of the few diesels without a DPF. I'm now, at last, looking for a petrol to replace it as I don't want to get involved with all that DPF nonsense.

Well I certainly didn't expect this to go to 4 pages

But I'd like to say many MANY thanks especially to Lenny for your input and links, you're nearly making really want to go for this !Removed! focus and problems and sort them and if anything does happens with the dpf....sort that too..BUT

Then there's the wee slight problem with having 1 key and it's the spare non fob one at that.....mmmmm

I've only had mine (hatch) for 3-4 months, but rust!.....both sills from half way to the back have been fixed and badly, but as for driving in general it's !Removed! good so IF I do go this mk2 1.6 tdci estate I'll expect the same....minus the rusty sills of course

we have NCT over here there very strict indeed especially if you have a nice looking motor,

My focus showed up less emissions than stock

No smoke atall neither ♠

I steam cleaned exhaust pipes prior to test aswell😉

The key isn't that big an issue in my book , I bought a flip style key from eBay for £31 with a new transponder chip in it and the blade cut from a picture of my key as I did not have the key code, admittedly I programmed it myelf as I had already bought my IDS diagnostics equipment not long after I got the car. But now with a modified ELM for around £15 and Forscan you are supposed to be able to do PATS coding for new keys, I haven't looked into it as I have IDS so use that for key programming.

I wouldn't but if he saw it, even I played dumb (not hard for me :) he'd still fail it and need a proper one

That's true but as I don't have all that stuff I'd need to go to ford if i couldn't do it

I'll go back and see it tomorrow as it seemingly cut out in afternoon while he was in it and the eml came on but after an hr or so went out....I've never known that, usually when it's on its on unless diagnostics turn it off

Very good point about "who joins forums"....

Some of them are car enthusiasts, but the majority are joining to find out about their cars problems or potential problems... I think I joined up originally because of a radio fault.... Never did get the answer haha, radio (touch wood) sorted itself out. But reality is that forums are generally negative places about all cars... Check out the vauxhall forum hahaha

It's true, that's why everybody or dam near it joins one, whether it be cars, bike, buses, tractors, tv, radio ect ect....as we all have problems of some sort. I guess on the other hand, it's good having places like them as people would need to go to garages and/or dealers and get fed whatever bs they got unless they're quite knowledgable through friends ect.

Definitely. What I love about this forum is that a lot of people stay on (myself included). Rather than getting your answer (I didn't get mine ¬_¬) and shooting off, some people are like "hmm actually, it's not bad" and stick around read about little things you can do to improve the car/comfort/style.... get hooked, spend loads of money and blame Lenny for being the cause of it all with his guides!

I joined this forum & others like it to simply pass on what little knowledge I have of driving & maintaining Fords, gathered over the last 36 years, in the hope that someone may benefit from my experience

I'll probably go later with the laptop (as I downloaded forscan) a mate's got the cable and I'll check for codes ect and take it from that....I didn't think I'd be doing that before (maybe) getting a car, oh well...

I joined this forum because I stupidly bought a 1.6 TDCi and immediately had DPF issues... And got bored with the 'other' Focus forum blocking most of the content unless you pay... I have no problem paying for forums if I use them enough, but I don't like being forced into it.

I stuck around here though, hopefully to share some of my knowledge, albeit mostly in other makes! And hopefully to give you guys a laugh now and then... :D

Remember that Lenny purchased his with only 20k on the clock & has gone the extra mile and spent a fortune to ensure his engine doesn't suffer the issues that are all too common with this engine

Purchasing any older used vehicle can be a minefield unless one is sure of it's provenance

Lenny did advise you to buy a 1.8 in his earliest comment

Also remember that although any dpf can be a pita - the real issue with this engine is turbo failure caused by carbonised oil & this is attributable to a combination of inherent poor design and user error with the use of incorrect oil & inadequate or absent servicing

Bought new or newish & serviced in excess of Fords recommendations I quite agree that this engine may not give too many problems - as others have stated.

You are not buying it new or newish - the car is 9 years old

It's got a few receipts for stuff been done but noticed that the service only had 1 maybe 2 stamps, so it's either been done in an Indy garage and didn't get stamped or hasn't been done. But it must have had something done or it'd have blown up before now I imagine

Have a squint at the receipts, my service manual is crap, it has about 3-4 stamps in it and that's it, the majority of receipts have been kept however, so that it can be seen when oil was bought (and changed by myself or others).

Mines fully stamped and had only done 46k when I bought...still had problems lol.

End of the day Stu, it's your money, if you like it and want it, buy it, just be prepared for potential faults as with anything. :)
