Ford Mondeo Powershift problem...

Hello,

We are new to the forum and are hoping we can get some advise, before we decide to have our car fixed.

We have a 2012 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI, business edition estate (163 BHP) with the Ford powershift gearbox. It has covered just over 136,000 miles (mainly motorway) and has FSH.

Very recently we have been experiencing issue's with the gearbox change at low speed. Appears fine when the engine is cold, but once up-to temperature and pulling away from junctions etc, the gearbox can not make up it's mind what gear it should be in and we get a juddering/stalling sensation, along with around a 3000 rev before it changes into the correct gear (this only seems to happen twice on a journey, then all seems well again, irrelevant of how long the journey) although does not appear to do it when in sports mode or driving manually.

We have had diagnostics carried out at our local garage, which picked up the 'input shaft speed sensor, circuit A'

We have since spoken to two garages who specialise in automatic gearboxes (one being extremely helpful, the second advising 'to get rid') Garage advised the diagnostics picked up the solanoid, which is not the issue. Seems as though it is plastic breaking off the gearbox disc which is causing the issue?

We have read on numerous forums, this is a known issue for the older ford powershift model Ford's. I have rang through too two Sandicliffe dealerships, to get a price on fixing the problem, neither have bothered to get back to me, so my real question is, after reading this is a well known issue, is this our responsibility or is it Ford's?

Is it a secret?

If there's a likely cause and particular solution to the issue it would be good for it to be visible on the forum to help others.

I've got a powershift gearbox, just had the fluid changed. Made a huge difference.

I took mine to the Automatic gearbox specialist in Hilton Derbyshire . When I went to collect the car the chap showed me a bench full of powershift boxes all in pieces.

I told him mine was jerky at junctions etc. Luckily the fluid change stopped it.

He did show me the plastic ring on the gearbox and showed me how much slack was in the ring, he said that was the cause of the jerky issues.

When was the fluid last changed. Got mine done for £240 Inc vat, and the gearbox was reset.

These guys really know their stuff

It was because i was asking information about the vehicle like the VIN and registration, which i am sure like you wouldnt want plastered over the internet.  I was not able to help any further than it was not on the TSB list from ford.

Seen my friendly ford mechanic today with a view to getting the oil and filter changed on mine next week - my car came with a receipt for a new clutch and rebuild for almost £1600 due to the fact a previous owner had not had an oil and filter change 😣  The work was done just over three years ago - well 37 months ago and has only covered 16000 miles since but better safe than sorry.

Thank you all for your advice.

Our Mondeo has had a recent oil and filter change, however after reading up on the internet, it is advised the gearbox oil is changed around every 35,000 miles, we aren't sure when it was last done, so assuming this hasn't helped!

Every three years or 37000 miles that's why I am getting mine done even though I have only done 16000 miles in three years.

Is yours definitely the power shift box? I have the 2.2 diesel auto but it has a torque convertor box.

Yep mine is definitely a powershift box and a bill for £1600 for a gearbox rebuild still under guarantee from the dealer when I bought the car due to a missed oil and filter change was an expensive mistake by someone.

Had my oil and filter change done today by my friendly Ford mechanic for a bargain £120 and it transformed the box it is so smooth now it is like new and he said the old oil was in good condition not black like some of the oil changes they do. Money well spent me thinks. ☺

I have a 2018 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI, St Line (180 BHP) with the Ford powershift gearbox. It has covered 32,000 miles, mainly motorway. Since buying the car brand new from Ford I have had problems with my gearbox. When changing from 1st to 2nd gear I too get the crunching/juddering/stalling sensation where the gearbox loses power for about 2-3 seconds then comes back. I've had this on & off for nearly 2 years now during the whole period I have owned the car. It's been back to the Ford garage many times where they say they have changed the gearbox oil but cannot find any hard faults so there is nothing more they can do. The car went in to the garage just before Xmas 2019 where they changed the gearbox oil again & since then it has already done it a few times. The last time was when pulling away at traffic lights so I doubt my brake lights went going on & fear that eventually someone will hit me from behind or it will cause an accident. I mentioned this to the Ford service Manager & his reply was 'you can't prove it is the gearbox that causes an accident like that'. I have had this issue at many times, when the engine is cold, when warm & when I've been driving for over an hour so there is no pattern as to why or when it is doing it but it's always when changing from 1st to 2nd gear, all other gear changes are smooth with no problems.

Has anyone got any ideas why this may be happening? I spoke to one of the Ford mechanics who informed me this was an issue with the older gearboxes but he'd never heard of it on a car this new. I feel Ford seem to be fobbing me off until my warranty runs out then it's not their problem but if anyone has any ideas why a brand new car should be doing this then at least I can go back to them with this info.

Have you tried another ford garage to get a 2nd opinion. Did the garage  do a clutch relearn procedure?

Hi Richard,

I don't do diesels but, I know from info on the TalkFord Site Forum, in quite a few cases where owners experience odd functioning of the powershift trans, it is finally found that the cause is a faulty egr valve and nothing to do with the trans. Faulty egr valves seem to be more prone on early Mk5 Mondeo.

Note: No  Mk5 Mondeo Petrol vehs have the Powershift trans - it is a normal torque converter type, 6 speed

I will be trying a different Ford garage soon as I'll be putting it in again. As far as I'm aware, the most recent time it was taken to the garage just before Xmas they did an 'inspection of the gearbox' and 'topped up gearbox oil'. Then they ran the diagnostics & 'found no hard faults'.

I will certainly be mentioning this clutch relearn procedure when taking it in next time.

Thanks very much Iantt for your help, much appreciated.

No, unfortunately not. Ford still say they can't find any faults with the car. It has done it a couple of times in the past year but not as often as it was doing it. Sorry I can't be of more help as I'd like to know myself.

hi guys ive been offered a 2010 titanium x powershift 2.0 tdci on 120k with this problem for £500 with test is it worth buying and changing / cleaning out egr? my friend said the gearbox oil goes really grotty after a few weeks then goes bk into limp mode.

once he clears the fault code it drives fine for a few weeks then same again could it be a broken seal somewhere?

If as you say, the oil goes really grotty after a few weeks then goes bk into limp mode, I would just forget it at that mileage, unless you are prepared for the worst and happy to find someone who can do you a total rebuild. A Trans from Ford is over £4K

I am confused by your post anyway - you say about cleaning out the egr valve (which is related to the engine) but then go on to say the gearbox oil goes really grotty - what?
