Ahhh I was thinking of a tachograph. @GMX well done =).

Tachometer is a rev counter, no? Mileage counter doesn't go down.

Answer was more correctly rev counter (revs go up when gearing goes down, down when gearing goes up) but tachometer is the technical name.
