Indeed, from an ST though, not sure if they are any different. Beware second hand modules for serious parts like airbag modules... can you trust that it will work in the event of a crash? Sure it's fine... but!

  • Thanks Luke. Your guide inspired me to see if it can be done. I must admit it took around 6 days to write up the guide, an hour per day when I got chance! Did you end up on SYNC 3 in the end

If I look my data in my RCM, block 2 (737-02-01) apart from the checksum byte it's all 0's. I assume that this can't be right. The car definitely has airbags etc. If I look at the as built data for my car on the Motorcraft website there is only BCM data. Is this normal for cars of this age. My challenge now is to work out what it should be and see if FORScan will let me write the block.

I think I will also find my RCM module to check its part number.

Any help and suggestions from you guys would be massively appreciated.

I understand this, but for a reasonable price, could be a good troubleshooting aid.

According to FORScan the part number of my RCM is AM5T 14B321 AG which appears to be different to the Focus, anybody have any idea as to why this is?

This is all the data I have in my RCM

What I find Really confusing is that 737-01-01 through to 737-01-04 should be the car's VIN. I  don't appear to have 737-01-02 through to 737-01-04. This is slowly driving me nuts.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would also expect to see 12 characters (10 data and 2 checksum) in 737-01-01

Although this module appears to be working (I'm getting the normal seatbelt warnings) could it be corrupted and if so, can this be fixed?

I've just been reading up on Ford part numbers.

My understanding is that AM5T-14B321-AG was first used in production in 2010 and is fitted to my c max.

CM5T-14B321-CA was first used in production in 2012 and I would expect it was fitted to most Ford Focus MK3's (Like yours I assume James), MK3 (C346) was introduced in 2011 a year after the MK2 c max (C344).

I that @Thatredfocus has a 2011 Focus MK3 which I'm guessing was fitted with RCM part no: AM5T-14B321-AG or BM5T-14B321-XX (if such a part existed) which is the same as mine and indeed he had the same issue as I'm having now.

I am now reasonably confident that if I change my RCM to CM5T-14B321-CA, it should hopefully solve my issue.

Just to satisfy my curiosity I've just looked at the as built data for a c max slightly newer than mine (2013) and it has date for the PCM which mine doesn't. I'm going to source a CM5T-14B321-CA and hopefully I can complete my conversion. Many thanks to @JPW, I couldn't have done this without his help.

Will post photos when complete.

I am planning to do this on a 2011 focus. Will this RCM module be a problem? What is emergency assist? Thanks

You don't really need it no, I would bother buying a new RCM module if yours isn't supported, just turn the Emergency assistance off in the settings after upgrading and then it won't try to enable itself.

The feature is something that is built in to the new SYNC system, older BVC didn't have this. It's designed to call the emergency number set up in event of being in a crash. But not a necessity for the SYNC 3 upgrade!

I think I have mine turned off in settings but I still get the message at start up. Will check later. Certainly doesn't stop any of the other functionality, just have to acknowledge the warning at start up.

You need to turn it off in both the screen and the APIM settings so that it doesn't think the car is equipped 🙂

FYI, I've  just created a modified version of this how to guide to document how to upgrade from SYNC 1 to SYNC 3 (in case you don't have BVC):

No need to change the RCM mine is AM5T-14B321-AG and emergency call is working well with my phone after adding the required numbers.

Replaced my RCM today, Emergency Assist worked immediately, Will post photos of the completed conversion as soon as I have fully re-assembled the car. Thanks to all who have helped me achieve this, especially @JPW

Should there be anyone out there wanting to do this on a C Max whilst @JPW's instructions for wiring and programming are spot on, the fascia, mounting etc (very similar to the Kuga) are very different. I will always be happy to help should anyone need it.

@kevgals nice work. If you want to share the CMAX/Kuga specifics, I will gladly modify my how-to)post it in the Kuga forum

No problem James, up to my eyes in decorating at the moment. Will take some photos etc in the next few days.

Buona sera potete aiutarmi per questi codici se sono adati per questo upgrade

Hi @Eri789

No, those parts are for SYNC 2 and are not compatible with this upgrade.
