suddste
Hi, I believe my car will require an input shaft bearing job to be done soon, it's whining in every gear now. Just wondering what would have to be done to change it? Does this seem right or am I missing tasks out? (see picture attached)
stef123
It will be a fairly labour intensive job, removing the box will probably take the average person a few hours. the hardest part will probably be getting the shafts out

suddste
yes to some extent but there is alot to some of those things. it says here 5 hours labour to do it. Is that right then? It gives me the costs so I know what it costs before I go, I want to make sure it's accurate and I havent missed anything

stef123
the mk3 mondeo (not sure about others) requires the subframe to be dropped to get the gearbox out, so i guess thats where the time went? if you allowed 4 hours to remove/replace the box, 2 hours to replace the bearing, and an extra hour or so for any unexpected problems. so at a ford dealer charging £80 an hour? thats a fair whack excluding parts... stef123
3.0hours to remove and fit so 5 hours roughly if there are no problems (rusted bolts etc), i would make that atleast 6.
suddste
so 5 hours roughly if there are no problems (rusted bolts etc), i would make that atleast 6. yeah, but remember the car has had the clutch done about 9 months ago so I shouldn't expect it to be hard because the gearbox has been removed recently? i still wouldnt rule out the possibility as they will be stripping the gearbox you never know what you are going to uncover tbh
artscot79
like i said it was cheaper to trade it in the figures assume everything goes to plan and no other issues are found opening the box i can say for fact its 2hours to get the box out max then theres the stripping etc another 1 to 3 hours dependant on any issues then the refit around 1.5hrs then the oil etc a gearbox specialist said 700 assuming there were no issues once they opened the box

suddste
These are the times on the software: Transaxle/Transmission - Remove And Install - 3.00hrs Bearing - Input Shaft - Renew - 0.2hrs Input Shaft, Output Shafts, Differential, Counter Shaft - Remove And Install (Transmission Assembly Removed) - 1.8hrs
artscot79
thats what the software states in the real world in the garage that means squat ceased bolts etc etc they wont do it in the time stated as theres so many unknowns once the box is out and split they check all the other parts even the specialist i went to gave it 6hours dependant on what they find when they get into the box you assume only that bearing needs done 7 times out of 10 theres summat else. ive been there mate spoke to ford and gearbox specialists and they state 6 to 7 hours which is almost what the computer says so thats around 600 labour then theres the gasket the oil and the bearing oil seals and vat around 700 quid as i was told. 2grand in todays market private sale with the box fixed you would be hard pushed to sell at that price as the market is flooded with focis the mk1 being not as desirable anymore thats just the way it is trade in youll be lucky to get 1000 quid for it fixed take it to any dealer and ask you may be shocked thats why i traded in private i would have got 14 to 1500 minus the gearbox repair at 700 thats 7to800 for the car trade in 1000 i was better off trading in. the main reason was the unknown what else would be found when the gearbox was opened how much extra would i have to pay i was told worst case get it rebuilt or get a replacement box at around 350quid for a decent one the bill could end up over 1000 wasnt worth the risk

artscot79
you miss the point the clutch is easy they have to strip the gearbox remove the casing to get to the gear mechanism strip that to get to the bearing its a big job and labour will be 600 or more id call and get some qoutes but it sounds as if youve underestimated the work involved
stef123
Is using an indy garage an option? It should bring your labour cost down..

suddste
Is using an indy garage an option? It should bring your labour cost down.. It is an option, dont know if the garages near me will do gearbox work though as it;s a specialist thing isnt it? TBH I am going to just leave it and wait for the thing to collapse, it may get another 40,000mls? Wha'd you reckon!?
