Things I do like

Got a wall box after 11months of granny cable. After trying the electric car experience and liking it , I decided to then get a wall box and another bigger battery car.

Done 931 (driven hard)  miles this month so far and cost £16. Not gone to economic mode yet as having too much enjoyment with the acceleration.

Just taken photo of meter box. All in there. I have no idea about home electrics so means nothing to me. If I followed the wiring I would know. Also small wiring with what looks like a relay above the meter which looks like I missed in the photo.

The small box is a load and usage monitor.

I do like getting the all clear from the doctor further to a cancer scare.  Still got lots of problems in my life but at least now I've (hopefully) got a lot of time to deal with them.

  • I do like finally finishing a model kit I first started 5 and a half years ago.  It's a very special model that i was supposed to finish by the time the aircraft took her final flights across the UK

Many thanks @iantt and @MarksST that makes it all a bit clearer. My meter, fuse box etc is crammed in an odd corner of the garage and there are no spare ways so I think that is the sort of installation I'd need.

Octopus sent out 2 electricians to install the  wall box and meterbox wiring

Finally got my head round how to set up my EV home charger. Today I'm now getting elec at 7.5p kWh from 5pm until 6.30am. (that's when I plug car in to connect otherwise it's 11.30pm to 5.30am. ) it smart charges the car depending on load on grid.

Sorry Ian. I'm confused just when 'cheap' rate actually is.

One timescale states 13.5 hours. The other states 6hrs. To me your statement indicates you charge your vehicle on cheap rate which lasts 13.5hrs.

I'm not knocking it because what you've stated either way totally contradicts everything I've read and seen on YouTube regarding cheap rate electricity times. Everything I've seen stated 4 hours max.

Out of interest how much was the charger installation in total?

I will try to clear up your confusion. My octopus intelligent cheap rate tarrif is 11.30pm-5.30am. But when I plug my car into the charger, the charger communicates with octopus. Octopus then decides if it's advantageous to charge my car earlier than the cheap rate to balance out the grid. If that's the case the smart charger switches on with variable charging rate up to 7kw. That earlier charging is then at the cheap rate and any other household use.  You will have to communicate with octopus if you want to know how or why. Got a graph somewhere to show.

Just done screenshot of the charging graph. The charging started just before 5pm . Then continues at varying rates untill charged to 80% in this case. All smart charged at cheap rate. Will do another screenshot of a previous charge a few days ago with the actual rates and time/cost.

like most things, don't believe all you see and hear on the internet/YouTube. Dig a bit deeper and you will find the real info.

This was another charging session. Plugged in at about 4.30pm. As you can see from the bottom of the screenshot I'm being charged at 7.14ex vat from 4.30pm until midnight on that page. That rate continues until 5.30am.  Like I said before I can utilise that many hours by using various other appliances in that large time frame knowing it's at 7.5pScreenshot_20231022-220650.thumb.png.51a2573ec18b338845cbd220f96941f7.png

And then to top it off octopus asked me if I wanted to have free electricity at certain times assuming when too much elec is projected  to be generated and instead of turning turbines/solar off , users use more for that period through free elec incentive? That's my educated guess. Keeps a balanced grid , and less use at peak demand.

Blimey you went overboard to supply an answer lol. Thanks 👍

I always like to back up a statement I may make with facts.

That's genuinely interesting and about the smartest thing I've heard a Smart meter do so far.

I'm still on an archaic Economy 10 tariff, so I get 10 hours of cheap rate each day, some afternoon, some evening and then some overnight.  But that's done with an old dumb meter, a dodgy clock, GMT only, and locked to specific times.  I do use it for things like laundry and hoovering, but would be a right pain trying to charge an EV just on cheap rate with this system.

(I would have a smart meter if they offered them for Economy 10, but sadly they only offer them for E7 here, which means I'd lost the afternoon & evening rates which I use the most).

Lol, yes. I feel lucky if it actually sends a reading to the supplier!😀

On EVs, I wonder if it would be worth starting a dedicated thread for EVs and associated matters rather than posting here or on the general "Energy Chat" thread?

There's clearly a lot of interest, even from EV sceptics, and unless the political climate shifts dramatically (unlikely) we're all going that way in the end (though possibly not with Ford!.😀)

If you look at the "like" thread, if it wasn't for me liking stuff occasionally this thread would be very thread bare. Do any of you lot like anything anymore?? Everyone's a misery now. Lighten up a bit 😂😂😂😉

Jelly adults would be tough and bitter, not appetising...

I like that my Maypole charger has nicely topped up my battery after a 24 hour charge 😀

Even my battery is feeling refreshed 🤣
