Don't suppose you've got a list of all the things that needed updating with the new card?  I've done PayPal, eBay and Amazon...  I'm sure there used to be more than that!?

That's pretty much my list, apart from Amazon LOL

All depends on who you've logged in with or used your card to buy from, i do the obvious including power companies etc as i pay on demand none of this £1000 in credit and cant get it back.

Just had an issue with my monthly mobile fee, registered the new card and they took a £5.00 top up instead of the introductory £2.49 for the first 3 months, They're now history gone from Lyca to Lebara even cheaper haha. No doubt i will have forgot someone, and a red letter will drop on the mat at some point, am safeish till 2025 LOL

That's how I have paid my electric bill all my life, wait for their invoice, then I pay what I owe. I have no idea why the majority of the population pay them monthly in advance effectively giving them an interest free loan!

Mainly because people need money spare for Xmas...when energy bills are at their highest.  Discount is also given for Direct Debit with most companies.

Tom, I get the DD discount as the 'invoice' amount is paid via DD. Also, if people want to pay monthly for budgetary reasons, they can set up a DD or standing order to a savings account on their own bank account, it will remain their money till they pay their bill, and if they do NEED it for an emergency, they still have access to it, as electric companies can no longer 'cut you off'. I still don't see why folk pander to a monthly payment just because their electricity company happened to have asked them to do so.

I pay DD for elec and gas, I can increase or decrease my DD as and when I choose.  and if I have built up too much in credit I can have that extra returned to my bank very quickly. Just a click on all options.

Most people can't budget that well unfortunately.  Multiple accounts gets confusing.  And if they've got money 'spare' and easily accessible they'll spend it rather than saving it for 6 months time.

I agree there are alternatives, but for most people, a monthly DD of the same amount is the easiest option.  Don't forget heating is mainly gas or electric over here, bills are double or triple in winter compared to summer.  People would rather enjoy summer and only worry about winter bills when they arrive.  That's part of the 'human nature' that was mentioned in another thread.

I've recently switched from paying on receipt of bill to a fixed monthly DD and have no complaints.  I can change the amount online whenever I like.  I can request the credit back whenever I like.  It doesn't matter if I can't take a meter reading every month.  And I'm getting a bigger discount than before.  Can't see any reason not to choose it myself.

So, would you like to pay your local petrol station a constant amount/month to fuel your car, and go up & down on credit, or pay for what you actually use at the time?

That saddens me still. 30 odd years ago I was a member of a business organisation that went into schools to teach 5th formers about money, proper money. How to open a bank account, how to balance a cheque book (told you it was awhile back!), what a mortgage was, how to seek the best one, and other actual 'practical' advice. The government has never taken 'real life' seriously as part of a national curriculum, and we wonder why youngsters think an interest free credit card is actual free money, till they get their 1st proper invoice at 35% interest!

Hey it's your money, I don't have much but like to hold on to it as long as I can...

Indeed.  I'm fortunate in having a fairly good understanding of money but it was never taught at school.  It's something I took for granted until I started realising how many adults can't manage money well.  It's not all about education though.  Health conditions and life circumstances often put people in situations where they aren't able to make rational budgeting decisions even if they could previously manage it well.

One of my most satisfying moments was a while back when I noticed one of my young staf spending about £4/day on a branded StarBucks snack. I asked her would she like a £1000 annual pay rise, then I explained to her exactly how much her daily indulgence was costing her. Thereafter, she bought a pack of 10 x coffee cups out of £land at 10p/each. I hope she still maintains her thrifty ways, or, earns a decent amount so it doesn't matter LOL

Saved a small fortune on my Gusto fancy coffee's buying from a Danish supplier, Kaffekapslen. spend over £40 for free delivery tho it can take 15 days so order earlier LOL.

Only things we have on DD are council tax, mobile phone and Life insurance.

I just cant see why anyone would prefer to line the pockets of the energy companies with surplus cash, moreso as things stand as of now.

Retail receipts...

It is fashionable now for a sales assistant to ask you if you want your receipt. I'm assuming the origin of this question was to save the odd dolphin by a reduction on paper use. However, if you decline the receipt, the assistant simply scrunches it up, and tosses it in the bin. (3 recent examples of behaviour are from SubWay, Lidl & Home Bargains).

Have I missed something ?

Most till recipts are now the thermal printed type usually unreadable as on grey paper.

You'll be pleased to hear that in my local Co-op they ask first and if you decline they don't print one. I usually only ask for one in there if I forget my members card - you need a receipt, till number, etc to claim your "divi" online!😀

Which reminds me, when I was a lad a common expression to describe someone who always seemed to enjoy good fortune was : " If 'e fell off t' Co-op, e'd allus land in t' divi".

when i was a lad "divi" was a term of derision

Must be a local thing then as my CoOp prints it out, then throws it out in bin! You just reminded me that my 1st ever camera (a Kodak Instamatic) was bought by me collecting 'green shield stamps' LOL

I remember green shield stamps and the catalogue you chose the item  from. We were lucky my dad did 30k miles a year and I spent many a Sunday sticking the stamps in the books.  You also used to get all sorts of things as freebies when you bought fuel . We still use glass tumblers daily that were freebies from 1970,s

When I worked at the co-op there was no option not to print a receipt.  Just came out automatically.

Most customers had wandered off by the time it'd printed, or didn't want their purse/pocket cluttered, so they mostly just went in the bin under the counter.  As Jimps says, most are printed on thermal paper which isn't recyclable.

You can scan certain receipts and be rewarded for doing so.
