Maps/Sat Nav issue after Sync 4 OTA Update

Featured Replies

Further to my previous post.  The latest download (6.4.0) does not fix the issue.  I am still getting the map freeze which cannot be recovered from.

Not good news 🙁

frozen map.JPG

Hi I'm Bill in the UK and I also was advised yesterday that my Focus Sync 4 has been updated to 6-4-0.

However this morning the map screen froze so nothing has changed on this problem, as far as I can, see despite it going on from the December 2023 update which created the problem.

Today Ford told me, that two additional updates are coming after 6.4.0 - but of course, no timeframe.

I am unsure if its true or not. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As a potential mk4.5 buyer this thread makes me nervous 😐

What % of cars have this freezing issue do Ford know?

I'm after a car with adaptive cruise control... Does it work regardless of the maps freezing ?

all of them that have the updates the car allegedly needs (for unknown reasons - usually security fixes)

Yes, no problems for me. Sometimes the Speed Limit Detection doesnt work, but I dont rely on these.

I assume my car is not receiving the updates as it is on the stable version 4.2.1, the last version without problems !

Never update your car 😅

I have intelligent adaptive cruise control (IACC). If the map fails it does not adapt to the new speed limits, which I do use a lot. It does however work as a basic adaptive cruise control where you set the speed limit (ACC).

My car has IARF and if the map fails I have to read the speed signs and adjust my RF (right foot) accordingly 🤣

I agree but having paid extra for the technology I expect it to be in working order. It has not worked reliably since the update last December when maps started to fail and lock up. It should not be beyond ford to have solved this issue after 10 months. I have not heard anyone with a 2022 produced car that does not have this issue.

Mine is an early 23 Focus STX and hasn't had any of these issues or updates as yet. I did block any updates when the issues were flagged up, but haven't been notified of any updates due for my model.

What puzzles me is why does it seemm to be only the Focus that has these issues?

Do the other Ford models not have the same or similar Sync systems and if they are problem free why can't they have the same software updates?

A very good question. I suspect there is possibly a hardware difference between the affected models and the later models without the problems. If it is indeed purely a software issue then you would expect that applying the later software would solve the issues but that must not be the case.

so they made a car with x hardware and it works...   costs / bugs / later features, meant a hardware update for later models and the morons in the IT department went down the route of developing security updates and new features on the new hardware - then muddled up who did what when - and when a glaringly obvious security flaw needed a quick fix and or worse, something dangerous about its operation had to be rolled out fast - they pushed the new software at ALL models and its killed early vehicles on the early hardware

but the accountants won't let ford dealers fit the new module on older cars as that costs real money - whereas moaning owners in its earlier cars can go to hell for Free

roll on 18 months of moaning owners on public forums - they get a kid on min wage from the IT college up the road, to look at ***** whilst a compiler on fast spin speed, tries to self destruct his gaming profile joining every software release Ford ever threw out there...

Having called the Ford customer service yesterday I did receive and email today sating that my vehicle requires a further update.  So it would appear that at least one more update is due.  I was also told that there about 10 days between updates (for my vehicle at least).  I'll wait and see what happens next week.

Hi all

Im still waiting on an update.  But speculation from a German Forum, they have been told quarter 4 for an update.  Now in Ford eyes, what does that mean?.

I Believe Quarter 4 is sometime in 2025. But it could be any one’s guess and for all I know, it may be sent to our cars next week.

Ford don’t seem to know them selves with different stories of what’s happening, but I am still hopeful of further updates.
More so with 6.4.0 saying
”These refinements will set you up for future updates to come”

Updates
These are done in batches in their countries.
Some are distributed quicker than others.
Updates are sent OTA via wifi or the mobile network using 4G sim inbuilt
if you don’t have wifi or great 4G, the updates will take longer or not arrive at all.

Battery must be in a healthy state and the updates button and full authorisation on Sync 4 must be given to receive OTA.

If you have switched of the Auto updates or not set and suitable dates and times for the system to check etc,  you will not get the updates

You can not currently update Sync 4 over USB like Sync 3

6.1.0, 6.2.0, 6.4.0 are all module updates only and nothing to do with the physical build number as original hoped for or led to believe by Ford.

Couple of questions answered.
Sync revision 4.2.1 or below, should not have the issues below to my knowledge.
Only since 4.2.2 was introduced and above has the issues.

* Ford Focus of Sync 4 build number 23159 Rev 915 are affected
* Ford Focus of Sync 4 build number 23191 Rev 946 are still affected except a smoother climate button transition on screen.

If you have a different revision to the above, you may have some to all issues. Revisions below 23159, should not exhibit issues as mentioned.
 I’m not aware of any other revision in the Focus higher than 23191 at the time of writing.
Im not saying there isn’t and these too could be affected as well. If you have a different revision and affected, let me know and I’ll add it on.

Issues are as follows:
* Map freezing
* Dropping calls.
* Garbled warning sounds
* Jerkiness pressing climate button
* General Smoothness of the unit and speed
* Maps freezing causes Adaptive cruise control to fail
* Driver modes fail when in use and revert to normal
* Driver modes greyed out and unable to select.
* iPhone info on Main Sync Home Screen no longer shows Battery, Network bars correctly. (This is only if allowing the car to use Apple Car Play in the background)
Ford have replace the icons with a fixed drawing of a Battery and Fake static Network symbol.

Note Apple have not stopped this, Ford have broken it on update 4.2.2 and later in the Focus.

When the Map Freezes
I’ve read comments that when map freezes, the can’t get it back to work, unless switching car off and on.

* Temp Fix *
If the map freezes you first need to ensure you’re on the Home Screen.

* Then Go into Settings

* On the right or left  hand side (Depending on which side of the road you drive), you       will see the map in like a quarter box.

* You must flick that part up or down to choose anything but the Map, so like music or phone.

* Then Press the home button.

The maps will start the process of unlocking and you should see a circle spinning.
It can take up to 60 seconds to unfreeze

This doesn’t stop the maps from freezing, but will unlock it to be used again.

Anything I’ve missed let me know, I will always try to assist.

we are in Qrt 4 - you just got loads of updates

12 months in a year, thus jan, feb, march = qrt 1 etc.

go in excel in B2 type

=now()

in cell B3 paste

=CHOOSE(MONTH(B2),1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4)

et voila

Poland MY22.5 just got today 6.2.0

When I have the map on full screen and it freezes, I just press home button which sets the map into the quarter screen on left. Wait for the map to fully load again in quarter screen, then I can select full screen again and map should be fine and working.

If i have a route planned when it freezes, then the last instruction and speed limit before freeze is locked in the dashboard display until map has fully loaded again.

I had mi car updated the other day at the dealer (the promised all-problem-solving-update) after the 6.4.0 update and it works. There are no freezing maps, calls, audio... Now the lane and blind spot assistants work as they should. I can't tell if the emergency brake assist works. The system is also smooth and has some animations I haven't seen before.

However, the IACC still shows an error in the cluster when I try to activate it and the dealer keeps telling me my car doesn't have it, because there's no Focus with it (I can change its settings on the screen though).

I still can't enter navigation from the cluster...

Apart from those two things everything works very well.

Maybe some of you have already had this update or can tell your dealers about it.

So this is fab news and I suppose what we are all waiting for.

so it’s just wait and see if we get it, unless we have to visit a dealer.

24145 is 2024 software, 145th day (May 25th)

So def made a while ago, so have they sat on it, or been waiting for the other 3 module updates to come out first?

@Artiu

You mentioned.  However, the IACC still shows an error in the cluster when I try to activate it and the dealer keeps telling me my car doesn't have it, because there's no Focus with it (I can change its settings on the screen though).

Did you pay for it?  My car does have it and I use it all the time as I paid for it.

I didn’t pay for BLIS. But paid for all others.

I was told Ford had been working on it for a long time and they have been testing it for a while, but nothing sure.

I did. I paid for everything available, except for the leather sits and B&O audio system, but the dealer keeps telling me I cannot use it because the IACC is not an option for the Focus, even though I paid for it and can change its settings.

That's the error I mentioned, in the picture.

Just a little more patience, I guess...

I wonder (in your case) if the dealer means legislation for your market means its not permissible to have the option, as its not homologated - if its there, you can interact with it, and it works - you have it - the point maybe its not legal and he shouldn't have enabled...

but one must also consider if that's the case, when a person with the same option drives their car to your country, he has it, but no one tells him it must be disabled so he doesn't use in your country, (maybe the handbook mentions on a page no one ever looked at...)

those scenarios make much more sense than the menus show up can you interact with them but nothing actually happens...  unless the dealer is really stupid (never discount this) and the hardware is missing and or he's turned on menu options that you shouldn't for a Focus - as no one in the world has the option (on this model) and the parts can't be fitted, and or fail to operate correctly
