As far as I know this update isn't OTA. So you may have to take it to the dealer

@Artiu Which update do you mean?

The one that fixes almost every issue with the system (in my case). It's not a Sync version update, but a modules' one i think.

This is it.

I wonder if the 6.2 to 6.4 are prep work for the new hardware - and those that complain well enough get the new hardware on a one by one secret squirrel process you not supposed to know about....

most people are too stupid, so it would be cheaper for ford to not bother.....

The update to 6.4 is in prep for an update to the APIM which is an OTA update.  Should arrive within 10 days of the 6.4 update.

I've an open ticket with Ford Customer relations and this is what i've been told this week.  If true the update should land with me within the next week.

But how do I update a module? My dealer said to me, that they can't do any update to SYNC 4 vehicles...

My Focus got it's 6.4.0 update on 22.10.2024. So maybe I wait another 10 days hahaha. I know it's not your fault, so don't feel responsible 😉

I don't feel responsible.  Just telling you what I know.  Take it or leave it

That's not up to you. If it's OTA as they say it will arrive sooner or later. But that's clearly a lie they can't do updates. My car has had plenty of them unfortunately. Or so they told me...

@Artiu
So my dealership said that they can no longer simply install updates via a USB stick on a Sync 4 as they could with Sync 3. That Sync 4 would only update over the internet (OTA) (by itself).
Or are we just talking at cross purposes?

No, no USB updates. The updates are OTA or the dealer has to install them through diagnosis.

But the thing is that my dealer said they couldn’t install any type of updates. Is there a way I can install those updates through diagnosis myself?

Maybe someone knows better, but I don't think they are available for download and install by our own. If it's OTA as @castlett said, you'll get it. If it's not, maybe you could try another dealer.

I can only tell what happened to me, and I had to complain (A LOT) and finally the update arrived and the dealer installed it.

I assume Ford are waiting on the version that cures all the problems before updating cars on PU version 4.2.1

The dealers can install any update that are available for your VIN. We, the car owners, can no longer manually install any updates wireless or by USB at all. All updates are OTA unless Ford does a recall or explicitly calls for owners to come in for any update.

That was what took so long for this fix to come about. They do their very best to not have users come in for manual updates. Ford has to pay every dealer for each update installed. Some dealers may do it for free for a customer with issues. But for a general ”all come in and have an update” is different.

@HSamwel
Could it be that this varies from country to country?
My Focus downloaded the 6.1.0, 6.2.0 and 6.4.0 updates via the Internet and updated them automatically without me having to go to my dealership.

The 6.x updates are the module updates.

The picture you show is a SYNC software update.

My guess is that this newer software version alone did not fix the issue. 4.2.2 and up probably has been programmed for a newer firmware/hardware version of some or one of the modules which caused issues. Ford does not want to pay for new modules or owners come in for updates. So they researched a way to implement a OTA fix.

This is simply the latest SYNC 4 version incorporating support for the fixed modules. However they had some issues with the module updates which took a long time to fix.

Any dealer having access to the Ford servers can do a update. This does not matter which country the dealer’s from. Some dealers may not want to do an update for a owner and then says to them ”they can’t”. This is because they have to pay for the access to this server.

All official dealers have this access. Because otherwise they can’t do a simple yearly service on a car.  All info they need to do service, instructions and whatever are in there.

Edit: Unless your car has issues with OTA or Ford explicitly calls for owners to come in for an update we should always expect it to be OTA updates.

I know I mentioned all below on the page 14, but I’ve updated or changing some of the wording.

There are 4 new updates for the Ford Focus Sync 4 unit if you are still on an older version of 4.2.4 and below

The first 3 updates are module updates only and to make Sync 4 ready for the main update.
Module updates only. 6.1.0, 6.2.0, 6.4.0 (There is no 6.3.0)

The module updates have to be done in order and when each update is complete, Sync sends a command of completion back to Ford.

The 4th and final update may come in parts and will install fully when complete.

The 4th and final update is the Sync unit it self and as previously mentioned should resolve all the issues. 🤞

The updates are set to arrive 14-21 days apart and will be sent to the car accordingly.
(Some are quicker at 10 days and some are taking longer depending on the country)

if the update hasn't been released for ur car OTA.

Then the garage will also not see the update.
As the update is released via the VIN number and nothing to do with Sync.

Garages are not getting the updates any quicker as they connect directly to the same system.

Now there is one caveat to the above, It may be possible that the garage doesn’t see the main update as a module needs updating first,  if the Garage doesn’t know the modules need updating, the may not be presented with the main update.

I would hope that the agarages diagnostic system is clever enough to know or it’s programmed to know if there is a main update to download the modules too,

All updates are VIN dependant and are rolling out in the countries needing the update in batches.
Some are coming quicker than others. Some countries are taking longer than others.

If you are in older 4.2.1 to 4.2.4 and not had any updates or would like the updates,

Then you would, first check that the system updates are on and all the ticks saying you are happy to share data with Ford.
Also the battery has to be in a good state of charge.
You will need to be In a good 4G area or connected to WiFi.

I received my last module update  6.4.0 on 30th Oct 2024 and I’ve been advised from Ford that my last main update is due and the end of November 24 and if it hasn’t arrived early December, to re contact them.

If I hear anything then I will let you know.

I don't believe that the Ford dealers can't see...

what we really mean is the dealers charge Ford to do the very same work the owner can do at home - so we tell Joe public the dealer can't do it - of course they can

It's amazing how many times dealers "can't" help, whether that's answering queries about the spec of your car, hearing noises that might lead to a warranty claim or performing simple fixes that you can find details of on forums 🙄

The dealers can only see what is loaded onto the Ford servers.

I took my car in earlier this year and I mentioned all the issues with Sync.

They connected and said a software is showing available.
The guys installed it and it downgraded my unit from 4.2.4 to 4.2.2

I asked and said that was the update and now the car shows green ticks

I took the car from the services and mentioned to the team again and by now I was already up to 6.2.0.

Ford Engineer connected and Ford system said no updates are available. Car physically shows all green ticks to say all up to date.

I’ve since spoke to Ford and a number of others and the dealers are presented with the software at the same time dependent on your VIN.

If the software was loaded on the server VIN dependant, and you hadn’t downloaded the update by WiFi or 4G, then yes the update will be available.

It will also show available if you have updates switched off. That’s because the car hasn’t asked for them, but Ford still load them into the server.

Couple of other things Ford can’t or won’t necessary do at dealers.

1) Downgrade software.  The system doesn’t allow it, my system only downgraded due to Ford packaged it back as an update, so the car updates thinking it had an update.
also 4.2.4 was a change in file storage and nothing else

2) Dealers will not actively update or check for sync, this is because there is a cost and time involvement. Also if its not broken or needing it because of a recall, then it doesn’t happen.

Dealers will check if u have faults like the current Focus has as long as it’s under warranty etc. If you said my phone keeps dropping from Bluetooth etc, they would also check for and update and may even report it back.
If you went in and said can I have the latest update, the answer would be download it your self as that’s not a fault etc .

3) If you have a module or Sync replaces, the dealer will download and install to latest software loaded as per the VIN.
This is why dealers stopped replacing Sync 4 units on the Focus as it was still downloading the same software that was the problem and the issues wasn’t the unit.

Note Sync 4 in the Ford Focus is 4G dependant.

New Kuga, Puma and Some Ford Transits with Sync 4 now come with a 4G / 5G

UK cars are all connected to Vodafone UK using Vodafone Global sim
EU cars use the same Global sim and will connect there either the Vodafone network in their retrospective country or partnering network.

none of what you wrote infers my statement is incorrect ?

if ford pull an update coz is rubbish of course dealer tools will reflect that too...

and if they haven't officially released an update dealer's won't see it either

the interesting point where Artiu seems to be on later stuff - either he got later hardware and then later SW releases pop up, OR most manu teams can authorise on a one on one basis the use of other files - if a particular car is playing up, or they want to see if a fix behaves

I also find it interesting because these issues had already been reported when I had not yet noticed them.

I would report a problem and go to the dealer once a week, at least, and write complaints to Ford and the dealer each time. I asked to return the car, to change it for one with no issues, and told them I'd get a lawyer. I also made complaints in the Basque Government Consumer Office because they MUST answer it, and it could have legal implications. So maybe because of this my VIN was forced to have the updates earlier?

Maybe you haven't been as annoying as I've been😂

Now, they are searching and looking into the problems with the IAAC.

I'm sure they won't forget me...
