Maps/Sat Nav issue after Sync 4 OTA Update

Featured Replies

Hello all, I am still waiting for the priority update (already on 6.4.0).

This is offtopic, but as this post has a lot of users this may be of interest of you all. I have recorded in a video the problem I describe in this other post:

This is the video:

The 12 of December I will go to the Ford dealer to the 30.000km check. This topic will be discussed. Has this happened to any of you?

Sync 4 update finally begin to download this afternoon. I had the battery on charge for an hour or so - smart charger stopped charging at this point.  Either this was enough to trigger the download or it had only just been scheduled by Ford.

Fingers crossed now. See what happens next time I start the car.

I think it must be Ford because I haven’t been charging my battery and it started downloading about an hour ago, thing is Iv had to turn engine off because I’m at work so I’m hoping it keeps downloading

My update started to download when I left work yesterday.  My drive home is 30 minutes.  Arrived home, still said downloading.  Turned the car off.  Went back 30mins later to check and it said Not Completed , Ford will make another update available as soon as possible.

Hope you don't have to leave the car on till its downloaded.  I thought it would download in the background.  Then install when you start the car

I would’ve thought it would continue to download if you switch the engine off

Me too.  Although when I arrived home I checked and it said downloading.  When I went back it said not completed.  Maybe just a coincidence I'll check when it starts to download again.  I can't imagine I'll be in a position anytime really to sit with my car while its running !

Surely Ford can’t expect folks to sit around with their engines running to complete software updates 👀 I’m screwed if that’s the case 😅

well you could ensure start stop is On - that way you have a worn out engine, a flat battery and no updates

Mine took in all about 3 days.

You don’t have to sit there waiting,  once it’s started, each time you get in the car and drive, it starts to download a bit more,

Sync updates work in the back ground..

I drove to work, parked car and drove home.  On the third day driving home, the update started to install.

To make everyone aware, the update is not small, it’s multiple parts to it.  So even if it looks like it’s doing nothing, it could down load anything up to 10GB.
Sync has about 8 parts will download.  The unit will the. Install parts In order there needed, which is the reason for multiple boots of the system.

Note

When the downloads start, even switching the engine off, the update will still partly download for up to 20 mins.  Depending on battery level and if the car can complete the update part of the download.

If the update can’t download due to the Battery, the car will pause the download and re start on next start up.

If you are driving the car, the updates will take longer as you are driving between masts, coverage black spots and so on.

Update speeds will also depend on what you connected to and where.

if you start on WiFi and then drive of, the update will initial pause to establish a link with the mobile network.  This can take a while as if your driving the networks can vary in speed and coverage when driving, so the link can keep dropping, so each time it has to reset it up and start the process again.

Finally manage to get SYNC prio update.

REMARKS :

- it took c.a. 1.5 h in total downloading time connected to WiFi ( engine running ,while shut down car connected to charger )

- it took in total two days ( started yesterday, ended today )

- whole proces looks like described by @Daz-UK but additional remarks :

1. First "black screen" took about 10 minutes.

2. After boot up from first "black screen" maps were "loading" and " updating map content " - I didn't get any errors with signs recognition etc.

3. While maps were updating I've switched car on - off few times - it didn't "destroy " system at all .

3. While maps were updating system was showing that update is still downloading ( yellow symbol )

4. I've switched off car for about 1h - after that time I've checked in ford pass app and it was showing that update was successful. So I've returned to car and there - same notice.

5. Beside changes already mentioned at forum I've noticed :

- Different animation while going into AC menu

- new symbol of " connect to mobile phone " on right/left window

So lets see how it all will work.

@Daz-UK

@kedzior87

thank you for all the information 👍🏻

I’ve now downloaded and fully installed the new Sync 4 update! My experience was pretty painless, took a 24 hour period to download, I just kept using the car normally and didn’t pay it attention. The main highlight for me is that the fan direction screen (Up, straight or down) is much more responsive.

At one point I got in went on a journey and the main screen just stayed black, turned car off and went for a bite to eat. Came back, went somewhere else, parked and whilst the car was left again it finished installing the update.

TLDR:

Sync 4 update download took 24 hours, with the main screen staying black during one journey.  The update finished installing after the car was left parked and turned off.

My download started yesterday (Monday) and completed this evening. Only I knew of this Forum and the very helpful information given by others (thank you!) when my Screen went blank I am sure that I could well have thought this to be part of the whole issue and also be very concerned that I couldn't use the heater controls etc (it's cold here 😄).  It did take about 20 minutes for the screen to reboot. I was on a 10 minute journey and drove around until the screen came on again. I also note that the word "rear" is no longer present on the control panel for the heated rear windscreen.  This whole matter has been very badly handled by Ford, no information pushed out at all to vehicle owners by any means and particularly given this fairly substantial update I am sure there are many worried owners across Europe not really knowing what is now happening. Major major fail by Ford!

Could never see myself buying an electric Ford after this experience, and in all honesty, my experience with Sync 4 hasn’t actually been that bad compared to the horror written in this thread!

Mine had black screen yesterday (only ford logo at the beginning) after I got in the car after work and I panicked (obviously) and tried everything to restart with no luck (engine off, door open, close the car and wait without the key near the car, sync restart with the two buttons on the steering wheel).

Drove home for 20 minutes with the car completely in the dark, left the car in my garage (where the 4g signal is very low, at least for my phone, I don't know if vodafone has a better signal there) and went home (5 minutes by walk). Speaking with other people in a FB group, I understood that they had a similar problem and was due to an update so I managed to relax myself.

After 2 hrs I decided to go back in the garage to check and still nothing. After 1 hr, Ford Pass said that the vehicle was in battery saving mode (this never happened because I drive the car a lot every day for work outside city streets, it happens only If I go on vacation for a few days).

This morning I opened the car and as expected it was in a very deep battery saving mode (no internal lights, parking sensor sounded different, never heard them but I knew about different sound when in ultra battery save mode). Sync didn't started working immediately after turning the car on but only after about two minutes.

Suprisingly, no updates installed! I have automatic updates on, scheduled sunday-saturday 01:00 and If I check for updates it says "you have an ongoing update download, sync 24.2.0.13" and then it says "ready for installation" so I don't understand if it already downloaded it or not and I don't understand why the screen went black for so long. The button "install update" is disabled, I don't know why.

Hello,

Are your maps working ?

Please check my post - after that black screen I had same I information that update is downloading but maps were still " loading".

You only have to charge your car or wait a little bit more.

Yep Maps work. I did my 15 km this morning to work and now the car is parked.

You said "3. While maps were updating system was showing that update is still downloading ( yellow symbol ) ". Is the "yellow symbol" the same as mine?

Yes same yellow symbol. But if your maps are working and you didn't have any long " maps loading / updating " message than I would assume that your update was interrupted  due to battery case and it need to download something one more time.

But it's just loud thinking.

Just checked my ford pass app  and my update is complete, I haven’t checked it out yet I’m at work but I was worried a bit because I had to turn it off while the display was updating the map

The same behaviour you experienced is what happened to me (Minus the low battery). Don’t worry

I’m glad that it’s downloading on more cars now and really happy that the view helped.

I Do think this could have been handled better from Ford and also Ford having a dedicated Sync 4 support to advise what happens with updates etc.

Apart from it saying they are sent over the air, there is very little in what to expect and when you see a blank screen for 10-15 mins, everything starts to run through your head.

I just hope Ford have now learnt and not to push dodgy software out, all though I’m not convinced.

Yep it doesn't make sense leaving users with a total black screen without say nothing. I can accept the fact that I can't use stuff like AC and other while updating, but no a total black screen without saying absolutely nothing!

Really happy to see that the update is managing to correect the bugs

Still waiting from my end, Im Portugal

Thanks for all the update information.  My update began 24 hours ago.  It is still downloading.  At least I now know it could be a few days to complete.

Thanks again - much appreciated.

Is there anyone on the forum still on version 4.2.1 ?.

I contacted Ford customer relationship on the 18th October and they said the update would be sent to my car but as yet I have received nothing.

Updates turned on and new Yuasa battery fitted at the start of July.
